Achieving product longevity with BioCote® antimicrobial protection

BioCote® technology helps towards offering customers a solution to this growing concern. Once incorporated into a product, our additives work continuously to protect against odour formation, staining and material degradation caused by microbes, and ultimately act to increase the product’s expected life cycle. This helps to reduce the output of resources in manufacturing due to there being fewer, but better quality, products being made. This shift from quantity to quality is key to progressing towards sustainable production.

The UK Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) commissioned a major study of product lifetimes, and its findings supported the notion that longer lasting products offer significant environmental benefits. In light of their findings, they state that they are looking for businesses to ‘design and manufacture goods that are more efficient, durable, repairable and recyclable’. By incorporating BioCote® technology into a product, companies can offer customers the personal economic gain of increased product longevity, as well as providing the environmental benefit of waste reduction.

Ultimately, BioCote® are committed to becoming a central part of the movement towards long term sustainable development. Our technology helps to protect our planets exhaustible resources through increasing a product’s shelf life, answering customer’s interests in resource efficiency and demands for waste reduction. We are excited to be a part of a generation where signs of change are emerging, and where there is a growing interest in product sustainability.

A sensible approach to consumer culture

The world’s ever-expanding population and technological advancements of the 21st century have led to an exponential increase in consumer culture, at a rate that is historically unrivalled. With a wealth of products available at our fingertips both in store and (more recently popular) through online shopping, durables are increasingly regarded as disposable.

Lately, however, signs of change have emerged. There is a growing drive to increase product lifetimes, and this shift in attitude has been prompted by an interest in resource, efficiency and demands for waste reduction. Evidence that has been accumulated within the last twenty years in regards to the environmental implications of consumerism has left little, if any, room for doubt as to the need for rapid change.

We say ‘no’ to nano

Furthermore, BioCote® have never used nanotechnology due to the environmental implications of doing so. Our business purposefully chooses not to use any form of nanotechnology because of concerns regarding the ecological profile and environmental face of materials containing this type of technology. We instead made the decision to use active ingredients that do not leach out of a product once integrated and are classed as non-migratory. This technology will continue to protect the surface of the treated material for the entirety of the product’s expected life cycle.

Our actives have an atomic radius of 0.115nm in size, which is supported in a glass matrix and unequivocally falls outside of the size range of a nanoparticle. BioCote® technology therefore does not affect a products recyclability, and will not leach out of a product and cause environmental toxicity.
